Call for Qualified Director Applicants
Since 1957, Northern Credit Union has provided the residents and businesses of Northern Ontario with great value, excellent service and the best financial products available. Unlike the banks and their stakeholders, it’s our members who own the credit union. They’re the ones we report to and we’re proud to keep every last one of their dollars working right here in the North, investing in our members and communities that keep us strong.
Northern has grown to operate 32 branches in 29 communities across Ontario, with locations nearly spanning between the borders of Quebec and Manitoba and providing employment to more than 280 people. As Northern continues to break barriers through digital channels, you can become a Northern member anywhere across Canada.
Our name says it all. Northern Credit Union is a homegrown financial institution that embraces everything the North stands for: our culture, our Northern pride and the sense of belonging to something larger. The North is more than a place – it’s a way of life – and it’s something we all share. We refer to that and our brand as “True North Strong”. If you are a business executive with previous experience serving on a board, you may be who we are looking for.
Who We're Looking For
Facing increased regulatory compliance within the financial services industry and intense competition driven by digital realities, our directors understand the need to continually re-invent ourselves to ensure we stay relevant for our 70,000 plus members. Our directors understand the new realities and are committed to the strategic changes required – even when they are challenging. This has led to an increased emphasis on the need for an experienced Board of dedicated individuals. Your Northern Credit Union directors must collectively have the essential skills and expertise to successfully govern a financial cooperative with over $1.5 billion in assets, with Northern being the 9th largest credit union in Ontario.
We are looking for leaders in our communities who share Northern Credit Union’s values, reflect the diversity of our membership and have strong business skills and relevant board experience. Our 12 member Board works closely with the executive management team to guide and strengthen the performance of Northern Credit Union for the benefit of all members, employees and the communities we serve. In order to meet the challenges of today and into the future we need:
- An experienced accounting professional with a designation(such as CPA) bringing financial expertise in internal/external audit, governance and risk management.
- Familiarity and understanding of the financial services industry will be an asset including understanding emerging opportunities, risks and technologies in the sector.
- An experienced professional with a background in IT governance, digital strategy, overseeing complex technologies, cyber-security and IT projects.
The successful individual(s) will contribute to effective and efficient boardroom dynamics at Northern, be inquisitive, collegial and collaborative, and demonstrate flexibility and diversity of thought. This individual must demonstrate an ability to meet the eligibility requirements outlined in Northern’s corporate by-laws and to represent Northern’s Vision of Engaged Members and Outstanding Experiences.
Northern’s Board meets on a quarterly basis and each Board member is expected to serve on two board committees for a total time commitment of 16-20 days a year.
Must be a member as of January 1, 2019. The Candidate Information package/application will be available on January 2, 2019 and can be accessed at: www.northerncu.com Deadline for submission is 4:00 pm on February 15, 2019.
