Phishing or Brand spoofing
Phishing, also called brand spoofing, uses
email to "fish" for confidential
information. Felons lead consumers to believe that a request
for the information is coming from a legitimate company.
They use email messages and web pages that look
like existing legitimate websites in order to trick users
into submitting personal, financial or password data.
Tips on how to avoid phishing scams
- Protect your computer with anti-virus software, spyware
filters, email filters and firewall programs.
- Do not reply to any email that requests
your personal information.
- Be suspicious of emails or web sites with
misspelled words.
- Contact us at 1-800-461-2238 to report your
suspicions.
- Also report your suspicions to the Anti-Phishing
Working Group.
Protect your PIN
Your personal identification number
(PIN) and passwords are the keys to your accounts. In order
to keep your money safe, never give your PIN or passwords
to anyone. No Northern Credit Union employee or agent will
ever ask you for your PIN or MemberDirect password.
Guard the keypad with your hands or body when
you enter the PIN at a bank machine or point-of-sale.
